Teaching in Qatar Universities

by Expatguru - 11/02/2011

"This article reviews teaching as a profession in Qatar's Universities."

Amongst the countries in the Middle East region, Qatar probably offers the best scope for potential expatriates who would like to take up teaching as a career. Qatar has a unique advantage in that Education has a very strong support from the Government. There are more than a dozen Universities all situated in a specifically allocated location called “Education City” under the patronage of Qatar Foundation.

If you are qualified, have enough teaching experience and good communication skills, you are sure to find a job in any of these Universities where there is always a shortage of qualified and experienced teachers. All the Universities in Qatar are located in very spacious and green surroundings and almost all of them offer in-campus accommodation. This is probably the biggest incentive as you save heavily on transportation which you would have spent otherwise had you preferred to stay off-campus.

Contrary to popular perceptions, vacancies in Universities are not restricted to just faculty positions. You have openings in Administrative, IT, Library and other professional support services too. In short, life inside the campus is like living in a city by itself, with its own governance.

Some of the Universities have multi-disciplinary streams such as College of Arts and Science, College of Engineering, Computer Science, etc. There are also highly focused and specialized Universities which deal with only a particular discipline such as Nursing, Biomedical Sciences, etc. This gives a very wide variety of choices for potential teachers to choose from.

There are a large number of western Universities which have opened their branches in Qatar. Almost all of these Universities levy the same fees as what they do back home in the US, Canada or the UK. However, one must note that the salaries for teaching faculty are also equally good and compatible with what is offered back home. The added incentive is that there are absolutely no taxes of any kind for expatriates in Qatar, which is a very big saver indeed.

For those who do not prefer a full-time job, most of the Universities offer part-time positions. As the name implies, the working hours are limited. Though the salaries for part-time jobs are not the same as full-time positions, it offers a good source of supplementary income for those who are interested in the same. The only restriction for taking up part-time positions in Universities is that you must be a resident of Qatar.

Overall, I would rate Qatar as an excellent place to work in the Middle East for potential teachers. Rest assured, the compensation is excellent as also the social life.

I am interested in teaching in Qatar. I am a Certified Public Accountant and passed the CPA Board Examination in the Philippines. Also, I have my Master in Business Administration Degree from Ateneo De Manila. A reputable school in the Philippines. I practiced my profession for more than twenty years and worked with multi-national companies. At present, I am teaching accounting subjects in the university/colleges here in the Philippines. It will be highly appreciated if I will be considered as a faculty. If you need my credentials, I am willing to furnish you copies of them. Thank you.

Dear Sir, I have pleasure to submit my credentials for a vacant position at one of your esteemed universities. I have extensive managerial and training experiences in industrial/ petrochemical companies and technical colleges. While I am working, I was able to obtain a PhD in Management via distance learning. Combining outstanding managerial, administrative and teaching capabilities together with perfect command of English and very good knowledge of most computer and internet applications, make me capable of doing the job perfectly. Besides, I am very familiar with the Gulf region where I taught for 12 years at the Royal commission in the KSA. I would very much appreciate the privilege of an interview where I can better demonstrate my capabilities. Thank you very much in anticipation.
